Hugo Takes 4th Place Welterweight at the Team Universe 2002!

In August 9 & 10, 2002 Hugo competed in the National Level NPC drug tested show called the Team Universe. For this show, Hugo dieted down for 8 grueling weeks, and trained for 1 hour twice a day. He dieted down from 180 lbs at 10% body fat to 160 at 4% body fat and competed against an some of the best bodybuilders in the nation in an extremely competitive Welterweight division. At the night show on August 10, after all competitiors performed their routines, Hugo was anounced as the 4th Place Welterweight Champion.

He weighted in at 160 the night before the show. After the carbo loading process finished he weighted a full 169lbs. His competition measurements at a height of 5'5" were:

Chest/Back Width: 50.5 inches
Waist: 27 inches
Thighs: 25.5 inches
Biceps: 17.5 inches
Calves: 17.5 inches

Hugo's Thoughts
It was an awesome experience to be on the same stage that other great bodybuilders such as Skip LaCour compete on. It was also interesting to see what a big difference there is in the quality of the competition when you go from the Statewide level to the National level. All the guys that showed up over there were superb!

As far as my fourth place, I am extremely excited as this is only the second time I ever compete and also I know that I gave it my 110% as well. Next year I will come in a bigger and more symmetrical package that I think will deliver a much higher placing.

Once again, like I said last year, if you are thinking seriously about entering a contest, know that this is an endeavor that will put your determination, body and endurance to the most extreme test. It will also put alot of strain in your family as well since for those weeks all you will basically do is train, eat, work and sleep. So if you decide to enter a show, ensure that everybody around you understands this and supports you. Without the suupport of those around you it will be very hard to succeed. I cannot thank my wife enough for supporting me 110% (once again) in this endeavor. I mean, she cooked for me all of my 8 meals, she took me to the posing classes every Thursday, helped me with the supplementation expenses, supported me morally all of the time, and understood my cold focused behavior. In addition, she spent all the time in New York with me by my side ensuring that I had everything I needed. As a matter of fact, she was the one that not only applied my Pro-Tan but also the oil backstage prior to me going onstage. (She also oiled Skip, 2002 Overall Champion, on pre-judging night). She worked as hard for the title as I did.

I also want to thank Tim Gardner, President of Body*Tech, and his awesome staff for helping me out with the diet aspect, the carbo loading (as well as the water manipulation on those last few hours before the show) and the posing (Thank You Tim! I could not have done it without you!). In addition, I want to thank my Parents-In-Law for their constant & never ending support. Also, many thanks to Allan Thomas and RJ Smith from Millenium Gym for his constant support, Andre Hudson for his constant encouragement, my brother Raul for helping out with supplementation expenses as well as taking care of some of my business tasks, my parents for always believing in my ability to make things happen and having attended the contest, everybody at work (especially Gordon Bremer, Tom Bingel, Ryan McCowan, and Patti Carter) for their understanding and positive support, my friend Gene DellaSala (one of the best training partners I have ever had), my good friend Robert Lee for burning some awesome techno CD's for me so that I could hit the weights and cardio with utmost intensity, my partner and friend James Villepigue for going to see me (and his awesome Mom for finding a great Hotel deal for me), my wife again for babysitting me backstage throughout the show (and for taking some awesome pictures of me), the awesome people at Prolab for making me part of their awesome team, Dave Draper, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Frank Zane for without all of the knowledge that you all have shared it would have been impossible for me to be where I am now and finally EVERYBODY that took time (and money) away from their schedule in order to go and see me compete (you all served as my constant motivation to put on a good show and diet hard in order to look good-cannot thank you all enough!).
