With so many books on diet and exercise these days on the market I am a very selective reader. Most books out there seem to always pitch a quick fix or some magic way in which to get in shape. Those that read my articles already know that there is no magic bullet for achieving results. Only hard work along with a periodized program and a solid nutrition program will get you to the final destination.
Nutrition is a subject that I have been fascinated with since early on due to my battle with anorexia at the early age of 13. It is because of this that I got involved into the fitness industry and decided to leave my successful engineering career to pursue a full time career in helping others achieve their physique goals both through my publications, seminars and through personal consultations. As a result, it is very refreshing for me when I find another passionate person that is doing the same thing on their end by sharing information that is valid and useful for people struggling to achieve their fitness goals. Will Brink is such person.
Will Brink is a contributing consultant, columnist, and writer for various health, bodybuilding, and medical publications. He is a well-known trainer who has worked with many high-level athletes ranging from professional bodybuilders, Pro golfers, and fitness contestants to Olympic hammer throwers. I first became aware of his knowledge on his monthly column of Robert Kennedy's Muscle Mag magazine. His first book, Priming the Anabolic Environment, highly influenced my thoughts on dieting, particularly in the area of post workout nutrition and Essential Fatty Acid use. Many of you may not know this but Will is the one responsible for introducing the benefits of Flax Seed Oil to the fitness industry. Now most high-level competitors use this oil (even if they don't admit it) to get in the best shape of their life. As a matter of fact, my use of this oil during my pre-contest preparation was responsible for not only facilitating fat loss and making me feel healthier throughout the process but also for allowing me to keep the muscle mass necessary to win my Statewide title (the NPC Typhoon Bay) unanimously (something that qualified me to compete at the NPC Team Universe, which is the natural bodybuilder's highest amateur level of competition). Now, Will shares his extensive knowledge of nutrition in two new books, this time in e-book format, called Diet Supplements Revealed and Muscle Building Nutrition.
In Diet Supplements Revealed, Will first discusses into depth the supplements that are promoted by the industry for weight loss. He covers what each of them are, what they are supposed to do, what the research has to say, the real world results and his final recommendations. Coming from my R&D Engineering background, I've seen situations where scholars get so into their calculations and research that they forget to see how their designs (products) fare in the real world. That is a problem that Will Brink does not have. While he may immerse himself in literature and research papers, the bottom line for him is whether it worked on the real world or not.
After covering several supplements such as L-Carnitine, Ephedra, Flax Oil, Synephrine, and Yohimbe, the book then goes into what I consider the most useful part which is how to set up a nutritional program that allows you to keep (or even gain) muscle while losing body fat. Like in my writings, Will recommendations are concrete and practical. His formulas for figuring out the right amounts for carbs, proteins and good fats are extremely simple to follow and very effective. He also provides a list of the best carb, protein and EFA sources. Finally, the book is concluded with an illustrated section on weight training; superb if you are in the beginner to intermediate stage.
In his other e-book, Muscle Building Nutrition, Will first covers very extensively the confusing subject of muscle gain diets. As you can expect from Will, precise formulas are given to calculate your caloric needs along with your macronutrient requirements. In addition, myths are exposed such as the myth of bodybuilders not being able to absorb more than 30 grams of protein and the myth that high protein diets are damaging to healthy kidneys. After the extensive nutrition section, a section covering muscle-building supplements follows which covers the Andros, Tribulus, Ecdysterones, Creatine, Glutamine, ZMA, Whey Protein and many others. As if that weren't enough, Will included an informative weight training section written by renowned strength coach Charles Poliquin where periodized workouts are presented that could be used by any athlete regardless of level.
As previously mentioned, both books are in e-book format with links to each section of the book, something that makes them extremely easy to read and great for finding information quickly. In addition, free updates to the book are included as well as a members only area where you can discuss fitness with other readers as well as get your questions answered by Will Brink himself! In any case, I give both books two thumbs up and thank Will for helping to eliminate the constant confusion about getting in shape as well as sorting out through all of the supplements and figuring out which ones deliver and which ones don't.
